The crooked thorn Frailea
Corpus solitarium, interdum vitio caespitosum, cylindricum, ad 5 cm altum, ad 3 cm diam. - paulum griseo-viride, dense albescentibus ad paulum flavescentibus spinulis curvatis et inter se insertis circumtextum, radicibus ramosis; costae fere 32, perpendiculares, fere 2 mm inter se distantes, in tubercula parva, rotunda fere 1 mm alta et 2 mm lata divisae; areolae in verticibus tuberculorum, ovales, fere 1,25 mm longae et 0,75 min latae, primo tomento flavo vix discernendo instructae, celerrime nudae; spinae corpus totum et acumen ut scopae obtegunt, omnes plus minusve curvatae et incomposite inter se insertae, omnes albae ad interdum flavescentes; marginales fere 14, 4-6 mm longae; una centralis, 4-6 mm longa, omnes vitreae basi griseo - brunnea. Flores 30 mm longi, 26 mm lati, flavi; pericarpellum 10 mm longum, 5 mm latum, pars inferior nuda est, ceterum parvis areolis griseo-albipilosis obtectum et areolatim saetis 6, ad 3,5 mm longis, curvatis brunneis; receptaculum 7 mm longum, areolatum, in quibus areolis sursum podaria magis exculta sunt, in unaquaque areola pili griseo-albi et saetae, 8-10 mm longae, curvatae, brunneae, fasciculis trium connatae, qui diagonaliter directi sunt; camera nectarea non vel vix discernenda; caverna seminifera 6 mm longa, 3 mm lata, vextura reticulari perspicua, in qua aliud ovulum supra aliud ordinibus insitum est, circumdata; folia perianthii exteriora 10-16 mm longa, 2-3,5 mm lata, lanceolata, flava; interiora fere 18 mm longa, 4 mm lata, lanceolata, flava; stamina primaria 12 mm longa, flava, stylo parallela, a basi glandulae nectareae sunt; secundaria 4,5-9,5 mm longa, in pariete receptaculi insita, stylo parallela, flava; antherae 1 mm longae, flavae; stylus 16 mm longus, eburnescens, stigmati bus 8, 4,5 mm longis, papillosis, eburnescentibus. Fructus 18 mm longus, 12 mm latus, paulum acute desinens in quo areolae pilis griseo - albis et brunneis saetis curvatis ad 3,5 mm longis. Semen lintriforme, 1,5 mm longum latumque, nitide spadiceum, lineamentis reticularibus in testa; hilum ovale, micropyle in parte pectinis, funiculus in membrana tenui, quae hilum praecludit; embryo lintriforme, perispermium deest.
Habitat: in parte occidentali Rio Grande do Sul in septentriones Santiago (do Sul), Brasilia, in rupibus planis et praeter eas.
Holotypus in herbario Ultrajecti sub nr. HU 0322.
